Western Plains North 2nd-5th grade students traveled to Hutchinson last Thursday to go to the Strataca Salt Mine and the Dillon Nature Center. The students traveled 650 feet underground to learn about how they mined salt, rode a tram to see different parts of the mine, and even got to bring some salt home with them. At the nature center, they learned about different plants in the area and helped with a service project of picking up plastic confetti that had been left in the grass at the center. It was a great time!

We loved making and delivering floral baskets to the Bazine WPS community, as you can see in the photos! Many thanks to Ness City Flower Shop and Lindsey Boese State Farm for providing the materials.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment mobile laboratory came out to do presentations and science experiments for North K-5th grade students. The younger grades learned about proper hand washing, what germs are made of, the different parts of a mosquito, and plants that repel them. Older students learned about germ prevention, water sheds and pollution, and DNA extraction using a strawberry. Everyone got to play a germ game, where they had to throw a ball through a series of panels that represented all of the ways you can prevent illnesses. Thank you to KDHE for traveling all the way to our school!
