Denice Flax, Music Teacher at Western Plains, won the 2023-24 VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award for Grades 9 - 12. She placed first at the local level for Ransom Post #7972, first at the District #7 level, and second at the state level.  This award is given to teachers who promote citizenship education in their classrooms and schools.

Mrs. Flax was honored at a dinner hosted at the Ransom VFW Post on January 27, 2023, along with other VFW award winners.  These winners included people from the Ransom / Brownell area:  Firefighter of the Year, Gary Horchem; Law Enforcement of the Year, Stan Berry, "Voice of Democracy" 4th place, District #7 Winner, Dalton Weeks; and "Voice of Democracy" State Winner, Lilly Payne.
